š¤ Steven Zelaznik (in person) - Ask Me Anything: Building a Postgres analytics MCP into a legacy Rails appThis talk will cover some of the basics about building any sort of MCP tool into a Rails app.
Some concerns we'll be taking care of:
- Authentication and authorization of the MCP
- Setting up restricted users in Postgres so no PII is ever exposed and no data is rewritten
- Putting in a preflight "EXPLAIN" query to reject any query that's too expensive
- Giving users the option to cancel a long running query
This simple use case will cover a lot of different parts of MCP, for example, setting up MCP tools and prompts. A lot of what we're doing for the client is helping the client take a vague question such as "How many drivers were denied last year" and instructing the chatbot to ask at least 3 clarifying follow up questions before exploring the Rails code base to return a suggested SQL query to run.
This talk will be a 2 parter.
