While animal cruelty was once considered behavior undeserving of serious attention by the criminal justice system, today both law enforcement officials and the courts are investing resources into their detection and prosecution. One reason for this new interest is the growing body of criminological research establishing a link between crimes against animals and violence against humans. Join us as Professor Jarret Lovell provides an overview of the research to date. His talk will place the findings in a broader cultural context that explores the meaning of violence in contemporary society.
Jarret S. Lovell, Ph.D. is Professor in the Division of Politics, Administration & Justice at California State University, Fullerton where he teaches a seminar on “Animals, Law & Society” as well as a course on “Civil Disobedience & Social Justice.” He is the author of two books, including
Good Cop/Bad Cop: Mass Media & the Cycle of Police Reform (2003; Lynne Rienner) and Crimes of Dissent: Civil Disobedience, Criminal Justice, and the Politics of Conscience (2009; NYU Press).
