Challenge: To enable customers to learn about a specific location/area or topic using data provided in either or both 311 sets provided below. We encourage participants to be as creative as possible and think about how they interact with the City on day to day basis. Both data sets provide unique information of interest to New Yorkers.

Currently 311 provides 2 open data sets. The first, and perhaps the most popular is our Service Request (SR) data set that provides access to complaints and request for services submitted by the public from 2010 to the present. ( https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Social-Services/311-Service-Requests-from-2010-to-Present/erm2-nwe9 ? )

We also have the 311 Content API available which provides our web content, including a list of facilities (such as parks, recreation centers, homeless shelters). This can be accessed by creating an account through the NYC Developer Portal ( https://developer.cityofnewyork.us/user/register?destination=node/89 )

Prize: Ongoing promotion on 311 social media. Exposing the product to over 80,000 followers through Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. A tour of the 311 Center and a visit with Executive Team.

Challenge: Can you make NYC more sustainable with wearable technology? Develop an app for a wearable that encourages sustainable urban living, such as saving energy or making environmentally friendly decisions:

  • Can you make an app for a wearable that alerts you to the risks of flooding or other extreme weather?
  • Can you make an app that can detect pollution levels and notify users?
  • Develop an app that can allow your device to tell you if you’ve had a low or high carbon day.

Prize: NYCEDC will run a blog post about this, either before or after winners are announced. Mentorship office hour with the VP of clean technology, energy and entrepreneurship economic development for the City of New York. If applicable, facilitate mentorship opportunities with other agencies.
