Do we need money? This workshop will explore the origins of money and present alternative economies that operate largely independently from institutional Treasury and Wall Street. These alternative economies operate according to humane and sustainable principles. They have their own currencies (tokens, digital signals, alternative barter or no barter at all) and develop their own means of conducting commerce, with the goal of creating a high level of self-sufficiency, employment opportunities as well as material and spiritual well-being for participants. For example, “time banking” is a system in which members give and receive services and skills using “time dollars,” a community currency that uses time as an indicator of value. The concept is simple: One hour equals one time dollar, regardless of the service given. From dog-walking to graphic design, community organizing to tutoring, cooking lessons to massage therapy, everyone’s time is valued equally. Other forms of alternative economies will be presented.
