A Talk by Sikivu Hutchinson

Details

Our program is a talk by Sikivu Hutchinson , writer and intergroup specialist for the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission.

Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson, an African-American social commentator and author, has written about the problematic relationship between black churches and atheists. Her new book is Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics, and the Values Wars. . Here she develops some provocative concepts and ideas that one could use to better understand and better communicate between these antithetical groups.

Dr. Hutchinson, who earned her PhD at UCLA, will be selling and signing copies of her book at the presentation.

A question and answer session will follow the talk.

On Dr. Hutchinson, by Nathalie Woods

Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson’s new book confronts the web of patrimony and religiosity that often binds Black America to its historical tormentors. “Despite longstanding traditions of secular humanism, skepticism, and Freethought espoused by such thinkers as Frederick Douglass, Zora Neale Hurston, Nella Larsen and Richard Wright, Atheism remains a taboo belief system in black communities.”

There’s a very informative interview of Dr. Hutchinson on the subject of her latest book: The internet link is http://www.blackagendareport.com/content/moral-combat-interview-dr-sikivu-hutchinson
