Abstract:

During this talk, Eduard will tell us how Erlang has changed his perspective on the Java programming language. The talk will include a comparison between the Erlang run time system and the Java virtual machine. It will also touch upon topics such as why you should use functional programming and actors, or why there's such a high interest for Scala, Akka and frameworks such as Quasar, Orbit, etc.

Speaker:

Eduard Serban - Polyglot programmer, currently leading an Erlang team @ Endava

Eddie spent last 2 years for building an easily scale-up and geo redundant messenger solution (Erlang + Java). He is a big fan of Occam's razor : “when you have two competing theories that make exactly the same predictions, the simpler one is the better", which definitively should be applied in the software environment: in order for a developed system to be proper implemented, use the correct language/framework”. All these ideas drove him to discover the beauty of Erlang for some projects, where scalability, robustness and massive concurrency are the imperative requirements.
